NEW YORK (PIX11) — Catholic Charities Brooklyn and Queens is celebrating 125 years of service but is in need for more support.

Cynthia Way, a participant in one of Catholic Charities programs, shares her story of overcoming addiction and homelessness.

“I had a really dark past,” Way says. “I got addicted to multiple things, and it left me on the streets.”

Despite a supportive upbringing, Way found herself battling addiction and isolation. However, she never lost hope. “I continuously prayed,” Way continues, “I knew things were gonna change.”

Way entered programs to get help and eventually found herself at Susan’s Place, a transitional housing program run by Catholic Charities. There, she met a case manager who became a pillar of support. Through hard work and guidance, Way secured housing at Mercy Gardens, a Catholic Charities Brooklyn and Queens residence.

“Mercy Gardens changed my life,” Way says. “I have my own place. I like putting my key in the door.”

Way’s story is a testament to the transformative power of hope and support offered by Catholic Charities Brooklyn and Queens.

This year, the organization celebrates its 125th anniversary. “We have very comprehensive services here at Catholic Charities,” says Emmie Glynn Ryan, Chief of Staff and General Counsel for the organization.

Catholic Charities offers over 160 programs, serving more than 500,000 clients annually. However, the need for their services is growing. Ryan highlights the critical shortage of affordable housing, citing a recent situation where 25,000 applications flooded in for just 104 available units. “There’s a terrible shortage of housing throughout New York City,” Ryan says.
