As summer winds down and fall approaches, families in Astoria, Queens participated in the 13th Annual Kids Fun Day, a catholic charities schools event organized by Catholic Charities Brooklyn and Queens. The family fun back-to-school event took place on Friday, August 4, 2023 in the parking lot of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Roman Catholic Church located at 23-40 Astoria Boulevard. The event was free to the community and helped families prepare for back-to-school season with limited supplies and resources.
A yearly success, the event was tailored for families with children ages 5-17 and served 250 families. Catholic Charities distributed 250 backpacks filled with school supplies and boxes of food to participating families. Adults and children alike participated in engaging and interactive booths where they also received information about wraparound services provided by Catholic Charities Brooklyn and Queens, including the Catholic Charities Mobile Outreach, Catholic Charities Msgr. Andrew Landi Early Childhood Development Center and the Catholic Charities Catherine Sheridan Older Adult Center. Books and clothing were also given out and music was provided by a DJ sponsored by Atena Medicare Solutions.
Thirteen social service providers in New York City were also present to help connect families to crucial information and resources, including Integrated Health and Wellness Mental Health, Housing and IDD; NY Life Insurance Co; Aetna Medicare Solutions; Liberty Dental; Weill Cornell; Department of Transportation Safety; Clear Captions; ACS Safe Sleep; Queens Mobile Library; The Floating Hospital; Childcare Center of NY and NYC Emergency Management.
