Emergencies are unpredictable and when they occur, there’s not much time to figure out what to do next. As a preventive effort, members from the Catholic Charities Seaside Older Adult Center in Queens participated in an informative presentation on Emergency Preparedness by SSG Hector Tirado from New York State Citizen Preparedness Corps.

The presentation highlighted four steps everyone should take before a disaster occurs, including how to develop an emergency plan, build a kit, be aware and get involved.

SSG Tirado went over how to build an emergency supplies checklist for survival kit while emphasizing the importance of why every member in the family should have an individualized Emergency Survival Kit. Did you know that an emergency survival kit should be robust and contain enough food, water, medications, and other consumables to last 7-10 days?

During the presentation, SSG Tirado explained to the older adults the type of supplies that were necessary, including items for sustainment, hygiene, tools, other crucial items, medical considerations, important documents and duplicate copies of important documents.

All participants were encouraged to create a plan for their own households and share this information with their friends and families. It can save lives.
