As summer ends and New York City students prepare for the new school year, Catholic Charities Brooklyn and Queens brought a burst of joy and support to families with the 14th Annual Kids Fun Day. Held on August 2, 2024, Kids Fun Day took place in the parking lot of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Roman Catholic Church located at 23-40 Astoria Boulevard in Astoria, Queens. This cherished community tradition helps families prepare for the back-to-school season and marks Catholic Charities Brooklyn and Queens’ 125th Anniversary of service and community outreach.
A yearly highlight for many families, the event offered a mix of activities and resources for children ages 5-17. Families also had the chance to take home limited school supplies and backpacks, fresh produce boxes, giveaways, books and toys for kids.
Beyond the informational resources and practical assistance from Catholic Charities Brooklyn and Queens and partner organizations, the day was packed with music, entertainment and engaging activities. Highlights included a K4 Construction Booth with Lego building and game stations for all ages. Special presentations featured Tiger Schulman’s Martial Arts Bully Prevention and Goldfish Swim School. Attendees also met Sparky the Dragon, the New York Islanders mascot, and Ready Girl from the Office of Emergency Management.
Since 2008, Catholic Charities Brooklyn and Queens has provided school supplies and backpacks to over 10,000 children and families in Queens. In addition to providing essential resources, Kids Fun Day plays an important role in strengthening community bonds. This annual celebration not only supports families during the back-to-school season but also reinforces Catholic Charities’ commitment to building a supportive and connected community throughout the year.
