Members of the St. John’s University’s women’s basketball team celebrated National Volunteer Month by giving back to the Queens community by painting the ESL classroom and reception area at Catholic Charities Queens Community Center in Astoria.
While the Red Storm donated their time, the Sherwin-Williams Paint Company generously donated ten gallons of paint, in four different colors, as well as additional painting supplies toward the project. The paint donation was arranged by the organization’s Business Development Administrator, Jeremy Lewis. Queens Community Center Director Debbie Hampson wanted ESL room to be bright, to enhance the learning experience for participants of the ESL classes.

Thanks to both Sherwin-Williams and St. John’s University, Queens Community Center visitors and ESL students were very excited about the new look.
The partnership with St. John’s University’s student-athletes was set up by Veronica Mullen, the Director of Women’s Basketball Operations, through her Community Wednesdays initiative, where each week a small group of student-athletes volunteer their time at a service site. Veronica has previously worked with Catholic Charities Brooklyn and Queens (CCBQ) in March, volunteering at Catholic Charities Social Adult Day Alzheimer’s Program in Flushing, Queens. There were eight members of the Women’s Basketball team, along with Veronica, who came out to paint the Center.
