‘Team Up’ Gardening Project With Community Outreach Services

Catholic Charities Brooklyn and Queens’ Community Outreach Services Health and Wellness team recently hosted a vibrant intergenerational spring event at the Catholic Charities Msgr. Pfeiffer Resource Center in Howard Beach, in the hope of fostering new connections and community spirit.

This innovative initiative brought together P.S. 377Q elementary school students, older adults from the Howard Beach Older Adult Center, and tenants from Peter J. Striano Senior Apartments for a collaborative ‘Team Up’ Gardening Project. Following a lively icebreaker game of human bingo, which encouraged the participants to discover shared interests and skills, the students and seniors were paired up to brainstorm creative names for their gardens and discuss their favorite vegetables to grow.

The event was filled with laughter and enthusiasm, and the older adults were thrilled to see their sunflower seeds already beginning to germinate. This inspiring day embodied the power of intergenerational connections and community-driven initiatives, and we look forward to seeing the continued growth and success of this project.
